読書に関して 2 ― 2023年11月08日
「読書週間」と言うが、実質は 10月27日～11月9日の「読書2週間」だそうだ。これが「十日間」なら「読書旬間」になるのだが。
んで、別の小説の冒頭を。
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

それはすべての時世の中で最もよい時世でもあれば、すべての時世の中で最も悪い時世でもあった。叡智の時代でもあれば、痴愚の時代でもあった。信仰の時期でもあれば、懐疑の時期でもあった。光明の時節でもあれば、暗黒の時節でもあった。希望の春でもあれば、絶望の冬でもあった。人々の前にはあらゆるものがあるのでもあれば、人々の前には何一つないのでもあった。人々は皆真直に天国へ行きつつあるのでもあれば、人々は皆真直にその反対の道を行きつつあるのでもあった。――要するに、その時代は、当時の最も口やかましい権威者たちの或る者が、善かれ悪しかれ最大級の比較法でのみ解さるべき時代であると主張したほど、現代と似ていたのであった。

力の入ったオープニングである。ディケンズの長篇小説としては、最も「全体の構成」が意識された作品。。
「フランス革命」と言う歴史的題材のせいか、いつもの「ディケンズ節」とは異なる（「舞台化」が念頭にあったのかも知れない）。
なお、「外国語の翻訳」と言う a point of view からすれば、「語彙」と「語順」と言う辺りが面白いだろう。
因みに、次作の冒頭は以下の通り。
My father’s family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, myinfant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip. So, I called myself Pip, and came to be called Pip.
――『大いなる遺産（Great Expectations）』（1860-1861年）。
私の父方の苗字はピリップで、私の洗礼名はフィリップという。しかし私は幼い頃、舌がよくまわらなかったので、両方を一緒にして、ピップと言っていた。そのため私は自分のことをピップと呼び、まわりからもピップと呼ばれるようになった。

ディケンズお得意の「一人称に依る成長物語（Bildungsroman）」と言う感じである。以前に述べたとおり、この作品も映画化されている。
